2009-10 Update

Posted by ebbnflow on November 22, 2009 at 5:34 PM Comments comments (0)

We began the year with a call-out meeting, which increased our membership to about thirty. At the second meeting, we decided upon officer positions and elected our officers:

  • President- Peter Oren (Sr)
  • Vice President-
  • Secretary of Cleanups- Evan Scruton (Sr)
  • Secretary of Meetings- Siri Retrum (Sr)
  • Media Specialist- Nick Meyer (Jr)
  • Advocacy Director- Jason Bowman (Sr)
The president arranges meetings, cleanups, boat-builds, and  trips. The vice president assists in communication. The secretary of cleanups controls the trash and recyclables collected at cleanups and records attendance. The secretary of meetings records all important information at meetings. The media specialist documents all outings with photographs and updates and controls our website and Facebook group. The advocacy director researches and plans advocacy events.

Our bi-weekly schedule includes, but is not limited to, hour-long boat builds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, meetings before school every other Thursday, and cleanups on the Sunday of the meeting. We are currently (11/22/09) sanding the inside of our canoe and applying epoxy and fiberglass. We recently supported the proposed "Pay as you Throw" waste management system, which unfortunately was defeated by a vote in our city council.

-Peter Oren
President of EBB

                                        Meeting 3 Agenda

I signed up for a magazine (Boat Builder) that will be sent soon which will include all the details of starting a boating project ? if you care!

-          Officers ? We need to decide if we want/need officers for our club.

o   If we in fact do want the titles, we need to distribute them equally so when you are filling out applications for college or résumés for future endeavors that you are accounted for your participation and ?start-up? of a club

-          Planning a trip?

o   Who wants to take on this venture?

o   We need an itinerary that includes a list of supplies and necessary tools, equipment, and foods needed to make the trip successful

o   I will try to set up a talk/discussion from DNR to cover the basics of water pollution and the importance of what we aim to do; clean it up!

o   I will cover the water safety rules and regulations (I am certified in lifeguard, CPR, and First-Aid training)

o   I will also make sure that we have the proper supervision for the trip/s

-          Starting the build

o   When do we want to start this building adventure? (Who will be doing what?)

o   We need someone to delegate the tasks that need to be accomplished

§  How many people will we need for this to happen ? quickly

§  What time frame are we looking at for the canoe to be completed?

Questions, Concerns, or Comments ? see someone who cares!

Kidding, talk to me anytime about what you want to do or plan!

Petition to start the club

Environmental Boating Brigade = EBB n Flow

We are looking to start a club that addresses the severity of environmental pollution pertaining to water. There are multiple bodies of water (lakes, rivers, streams, etc) throughout the state of Indiana that are contaminated with debris of all types. Our club would provide the necessary means of recognizing the problem and fitting the proper solution to getting rid of the unearthly waste.

Our Goals:

  1. We will hold meetings of importance pertaining to trash build-up throughout our nation, but specifically focusing on Indiana lakes, streams, rivers, etc.
    1. DNR will be a vital source for our information
  2. Short Term, we can start by going around local bodies of water to clean up and show the devastation that littering can cause to our environment, but specifically the cause-and-effect it has on our city.
  3. Long Term, we would start by building a canoe from start to finish – this would be completed from fall through winter months.
    1. We have the tools and space available to necessitate this adventure.
    2. We completely understand that all cost will come from ourselves and the school will not be held responsible for covering any of our expenditures.

4. Long Term, we plan to use the built canoe and other kayaks to travel down the banks of the bodies of water to help reduce the pollution locally and state-wide.
